There's always time for a book - February 2nd, 2008

Are these biscuits taking over the world?
I'm here to ask the important questions in life.

Trendy cafe in Brisbane, Australia. Small town in Bedfordshire, England. Hotel in Cruden Bay, seaside town near Aberdeen, Scotland. What do these three places have in common?

Sweet, crunchy... and sinister? )

They are a few examples of the places I have been given this biscuit with coffee. Lotus caramelised biscuits are from Belgium but seem to be stealthily following me around the world. Is anyone else experiencing this phenomenon? Will these small and apparently harmless biscuits turn out to be robots that are going to take control of us all?

A lot of my friends have been putting up their end of month reading lists. I've just started recording what I read as I was curious to check on my reading habits (want to make sure the internet isn't stealing reading time) but have realised something as I think about my list and other people's lists. I'm actually rationing my reading!

I am so jealous of everyone who has too many books to read! I sometimes find myself slowing myself down when I read, not because I'm a super-fast reader or anything but because I'm worried I'll run out of good things to read. I think it's worse since I left nearly all of my books behind in Australia.

At the moment I have, um, four new books, plus three definitely good and a few possibly good library novels, a solid interesting non-fiction and a small pile of mixed second hand books, but I still feel like I need to pace myself out. I know I'll be saving those new books to read over the next few weekends.

Maybe this is part of that possible book addiction I talked about a couple of years ago. Is there anyone else out there who is worried they are going to run out of books?

Edited to add: And of course, the moral of this story is don't forget to write about books you're enjoying so I have more to go and borrow/buy!
