Thanks to the wonders of the internet I was just able to watch the apology the Australian government has made to the stolen generations of Indigenous Australians. The stolen generations were the 10-30% of Aboriginal children forcibly removed from their families and placed (mostly) into institutionalised care up until the 1970s. Apologising on behalf of the Parliaments that made the laws that caused these actions acknowledges that the policies were wrong. It has long been seen as a key step in moving forward with reconciliation between Indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. Hopefully the positive practical steps for amending the large gap in quality of life between Indigenous and non-indigenous Australians outlined in the speech will be given momentum from the apology, and will produce real change. I'm just about to go to bed, so I don't have time to be more eloquent about this. I just wanted to say that I think acknowledging the mistakes of the past is a good way to move forward to a better future, and I'm glad our government did so.
