Photos!
An overdue post on some of my recent travels. It mostly consists of photos!

Featuring a mermaid, a Begijnhof, more spring flowers than you can shake a stick at and a chateau on a mountaintop )

Belated travel post
As I’ve said, we had a fantastic time in Spain. Not only was it great catching up with an old friend and meeting a new one, but the too-short time we had around the country convinced me I need to go back.

Warning for very long post with pictures )

Next up, Pompeii, as I got a bit carried away when writing about it!

Boobook owl? Pshaw.
Here's a brief summary of my time camping on the weekend, with photos again making up the bulk of the content!

Satisfying your inner wetland geek
Sorry for the late travel post - I'm having a hard week re-writing my thesis conclusion and introduction! Please take this as an excuse for the image reliant post as well.

Darwin and Kakadu )

And for those collecting Australianisms, this entry has reminded me of two more shortenings: saltie for salt water crocodile and wedgie for wedge tailed eagle!

Memorable reading spots
Inspired by Jen Robinson's list of memorable places she has read I thought I would belatedly do the same.

Warning: nostalgia under this cut )

Planes, trains and a slow boat to Greece
Wow, a book post with only one book in it! I thought seeing as I’m at home nearly all the time at the moment I might try posting shorter entries more often. It might also help avoid strange juxtapositions like my last book entry.

Anyway, a great book I read this week was Maureen’s Johnson’s 13 little blue envelopes, which came out in Australia recently. The book features 17 year old Ginny, who is on a mystery tour of Europe following the directions of her flaky aunt. The notes, given in a series of envelopes, direct Ginny to a variety of people and places over the course of a month. I love this idea (why are all my aunts so normal?) even if I know that I would have hated being in a similar situation at age 17. Or at my age, now I think of it, as I am too bossy and like planning stuff myself. Anyway, one of the best aspects of this story is the way it let the setting switch around between interesting places. And travelling by yourself overseas is a perfect basis for a coming-of-age story. It was thoroughly enjoyable.

But I struck an unusual problem with the book. I am a fan of Maureen Johnson’s blog. It’s actually the reason I bought the book. But her distinctive funny voice was apparent in Ginny’s story to such an extent I kept seeing the main character as Ginny/Maureen rather than just Ginny. It probably wasn’t helped by the grief-related detachment Ginny shows in a large portion of the book. I am guessing a re-read will help me feel Ginny’s character more strongly. This might be one of the first times I’ve read an author’s blog before their book and although I like having a whole book of Maureen I hope it’s not going to be a consistent theme with other blogging authors whose books I haven’t tried yet!

Close, cold and beautiful
I am starting my summary of my New Zealand trip by apologising to New Zealand. How I wronged you when I planned to visit when I had time as an old and potentially infirm person! I didn’t realise you would have such beautiful and diverse landscapes with easily accessible wildlife. I shouldn’t have waited until I got a free trip to go!

Long description of short holidy with pretty pictures to alleviate boredom )

Sorry for the length of the post, I didn’t keep a travel journal and think that is reflected here! And really, it just makes up for the posts that would have happened when I was away. Reviews of recent books coming soon.

Update: Other photos - and yes there are a few - are here. If you would like to see the full set let me know and we'll add you to our friend's list.

Return to Moreton
[info]talisen and I went to Moreton Island for a long weekend away, with the same group as last April namely my mum and sister and various hanger ons. All the stuff I said last time was true this time too, there was wetland appreciation, bird watching, fishing, $15/night accommodation, novel reading, relaxing and chatting over wine and nibblies. This time there was swimming too. The water was still slightly cooler than I like, but who could resist going for a swim when the ocean looks like this?

Moreton beach

This time around we caught the posher barge (due to an unfortunate misjudging of traffic that had us miss the normal one). It was nice to get there quickly in a boat with a cafe and little tables and seats, but I don't mind the more casual barge that doesn't seem to recognise what a safety talk is and lets people wander around with their own stubbies in their hands :)

Anyway, it was great to go away and not work. I did mean to do some but found I had left stuff at home, including a pen, which I took to be a sign I needed a break. Unfortunately, the relaxation was undone by waking up this morning with a horribly stiff neck but at least I can look at the lovely photos and pretend I'm on the island watching dolphins swim past.

More than you wanted to know about Girraween
We've been meaning to go to Girraween National Park for ages, but finally got around to it last week. A lot of the stuff under the clip are notes for me to remember, but you might like to see some photos from the place.

Holiday report - now with photos! )
